RPC Region Code

RPC – Regional Playback Control is a system used by DVD manufacturers to limit the use of DVD’s divided by geographic regions.  RPC region code is implemented on most commercial DVD’s and on most DVD players.
Older DVD drives use RPC-1 firmware, which means the drive allows DVDs from any region to play. Newer drives use RPC-2 firmware, which enforces the DVD region coding at the hardware level. These drives can often be reflashed or hacked with RPC-1 firmware, effectively making the drive region-free. This may void the drive warranty.
In most computer drives, users are allowed to change the region code up to five times, once the counter gets to 0 your drive is permanently locked to the last region it was set to. The limit is built into the firmware. There are ways to get around it, some models have resetting tools made by 3rd parties to reset the change limit back to 5 and some also have firmware patches to remove the region lock. Using either of these will invalidate your drives warranty and particularly the later can turn your drive into a paperweight.
Open source DVD players as VLC player can ignore region coding. Some software can work around locked RPC 2 firmware. Other software removes or bypasses the DVD region code.
